bugs me how publications like complex will profile interesting artists in order to sell copies/get clicks and then shit on their records? it happens to me all the time- pitchfork and that ilk being like “can we interview you?” after totally taking the piss out of me in a review. have a stance on an artist and stick to it. don’t act like you respect them then throw them under the bus.
Lorde, your opinion is certainly not unfounded, and I’m sure this must be frustrating for you as an artist to feel as if publications are being deceitful. But as someone who works for Complex, it seems important to note that David Drake, who wrote the review, has nothing to do with who ends up on the cover of the magazine. His opinion is his own and nothing more. What makes any publication great is that it is comprised of several perspectives under one roof. Just because David happens to not like the album doesn’t mean Complex as a magazine does not respect her. In fact, it would be deceitful for David to not be honest with his own feelings simply in the interest of appeasing a former cover star.
